Moments On 35mm Film
Film Photography · Cairns, QLD & Beyond
Photographs that feel
the way the moment did.
There’s something a digital camera cannot replicate — the warmth, the grain, the imperfect beauty of a frame captured on 35mm film. These are photographs made to last a lifetime.
What is 35mm film
Old format. Timeless feeling.
35mm film has been around since the late 1800s, and yet it hasn’t gone anywhere — because nothing else produces images quite like it. Each frame is captured on a strip of light-sensitive film inside the camera. There’s no instant preview. No deleting and retaking. Just you, the moment, and the click of a shutter.
When the roll is developed and scanned, the images carry a texture and depth that digital photography simply doesn’t replicate. The grain is real. The colours are organic. The highlights roll off gently rather than clipping into harsh whites. It’s not a filter — it’s physics.
“Film slows everything down. It makes you more present, more intentional. And the photographs show that.”
Each roll holds 36 frames. That limitation is a gift — it brings a quiet focus to every session, and means that what gets captured is truly worth capturing.
Why film
For the moments that matter most.
Film photography is the right choice when you want your photographs to feel like memories — not records. Here’s why it works beautifully for life’s big moments:
Weddings
Film renders skin tones warmly and handles the harsh contrast of Australian sun and shade with ease. Your wedding photos will feel soft, romantic, and genuinely timeless.
School Formals
This is a night your teenager will look back on for decades. Film gives formal photos a quality that stands apart — something that actually looks like it belongs in a frame on the wall.
Birthdays
The joy, the candles, the chaos of a room full of people you love. Film captures that energy and warmth in a way that feels lived-in rather than overly posed or produced.
Family Portraits
Families change. Children grow. Film portraits have the kind of lasting quality that makes them something you’ll pass down — not just post and forget.
Film is also a wonderful fit for engagements, pregnancy announcements, milestone birthdays, and any occasion where you want the photographs to carry real emotional weight.
The process
How it works, start to finish.
01
WE CONNECT
We start with a conversation — about you, your vision, and what you’re hoping to capture. No obligation, just a chat to make sure we’re a good fit and that you understand what working with film looks like.
02
WE PLAN THE SESSION
Together we’ll lock in the location, timing, and feel of the shoot. For Cairns-based sessions, there’s no shortage of magic — golden hour light up on the Tablelands, the soft shade of the Botanic Gardens, or the warm tones of the beachfront at dusk.
03
THE SHOOT
Sessions are relaxed and unhurried. Film naturally encourages a slower, more intentional pace — which means more real moments and fewer forced smiles. I shoot alongside you, not at you.
04
FILM DEVELOPMENT & SCANNING
After the session, your rolls are sent to a professional lab for development and high-resolution scanning. This takes time — usually 2–4 weeks — but the results are worth every day of the wait.
05
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS DELIVERED
Your final images are delivered via an online gallery, ready to download, print, and keep forever. Prints and albums can also be arranged on request.
FAQ
Questions, answered honestly.
Film photography takes longer than digital, and that’s part of the process. After your session, rolls are sent to the lab for development and scanning, which typically takes 2–4 weeks. You’ll receive a notification as soon as your gallery is ready.
This varies by session, but a standard roll of 35mm holds 36 frames. For most sessions I shoot multiple rolls, so you can expect a curated selection of 40–80 images depending on the package. Every photo delivered is one I’m proud to put my name on.
No — and that’s one of the beautiful things about film. There’s no chimping, no reviewing on a screen mid-shoot. It keeps the session natural and genuine. You won’t see the images until the lab has worked its magic, which makes the moment you open your gallery genuinely exciting.
I am a film-first photographer. Some packages include a digital component for wider coverage (especially for weddings), but the heart of the work is always shot on film. We can talk through what suits your event best during our initial chat.
Film is reliable when handled correctly, and I’ve never had a roll lost or ruined. I use trusted professional labs with quality controls in place. For high-stakes events like weddings, I always shoot backup rolls to make sure we’re covered.
Film does carry additional costs — film stock, lab fees, and scanning all add up. This is reflected in my pricing. But the investment is in photographs that genuinely endure. Think of it as the difference between buying something cheap and something worth keeping.
Absolutely. I’m based in Cairns but available for events anywhere in Australia — and beyond. Whether it’s a wedding in the Whitsundays, a formal in Brisbane, or a destination elopement overseas, I’d love to be part of it. Travel costs are always discussed upfront so there are no surprises.
Head to the contact page and send me a message with your event date, type, location, and any ideas you have. I’ll get back to you within a couple of days to arrange a time to chat properly. I take on a limited number of sessions each season, so the earlier you reach out, the better.
