Family Portraits

Your family, right now,
on film forever.
Families change. Children grow faster than anyone is ready for. A film portrait session is the simplest way to hold onto exactly who you all are — right now, in this moment — before it’s different.
Why film for families
Photographs worth passing down.
There’s a difference between a photo that gets saved to a phone and a photograph that gets framed, printed, and handed down. Film family portraits are the latter. The grain, the colour, the warmth — it all adds up to something that feels like it belongs on a wall rather than buried in a camera roll.
Film also changes the energy of a session. There’s no screen to check, no anxious reviewing between shots. It stays relaxed. Kids behave more naturally. Parents stop worrying about looking perfect. And the photographs that come out of that are far more real and far more beautiful than anything posed.
“The best family portraits I’ve ever made are the ones where everyone forgot I was there.”
Real moments
Film naturally creates a slower, more relaxed session. What you get are genuine expressions and real interactions — not a family trying to look like they’re having fun.
Beautiful outdoors
Far North Queensland is made for film. The golden light, the lush greens, the coastline — it all looks extraordinary on 35mm, especially in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon.
Quality that lasts
Film portraits hold up beautifully at large print sizes. These are images made to be printed, framed, and displayed — not just scrolled past on a screen.
The session
Easy, unhurried, and a little bit fun.
Family sessions with me are relaxed by design. There’s no military schedule of poses to get through. Instead, I work around your family — your rhythms, your kids’ energy levels, your comfort. I’ll guide you when needed and step back when the real moments start happening on their own.
Sessions run approximately one to one and a half hours. Your gallery will be ready 2–4 weeks after your session once the film has been developed and scanned. Digital add-ons are available on request.

FAQ
Family portrait questions.
They almost never do, and that’s completely fine. I am experienced working with children of all ages and knows that the best approach is patience, not pressure. Some of the most beautiful family portraits come from the chaos of a toddler mid-tantrum or a baby who refused to sit still. Real life is the point.
Most family sessions result in a gallery of 40–70 photographs, depending on the length and energy of the session. Every image delivered is one Kate is genuinely proud of.
Stick to tones rather than matching outfits — think complementary colours in the same warm or cool family. Avoid bold logos or busy patterns. Comfortable, relaxed clothing tends to photograph best on film. I am happy to give guidance once you’ve booked.
Yes. Prints and albums can be arranged on request. I work with professional labs to ensure your photographs are printed at the quality they deserve. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Yes. I’m based in Cairns but available for sessions across Queensland and beyond. If you’re visiting Far North Queensland and want a portrait session while you’re here, that works beautifully too. Travel costs are always discussed upfront.
